Staten Island - LTRO - One Year Anniversary of Superstorm Sandy
Tue, 2013-10-29 23:12 — Kathy Gilbeaux
Greetings,
This Tuesday, on the one year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy, everyone impacted by this tragic storm will be commeorating the events of last year in their own way.
Some will feel most comforted by staying home, or gathering with family or friends, or in their religious communities. Some will join in the many anniversary events happening around the island, seeking the strength of the broader Sandy-impacted community.
Whether you are a resident who lost everything, or a caregiver, or a service provider who is feeling very tired, this anniversary is a stressful time.
Be sure to take care of yourself. Rest. Talk about how you are feeling with family and friends. Pay attention to your health.
And remember that many emotional care services available on Staten Island are open to both impacted residents and their caregivers.
You can talk to a crisis counselor confidentiality and free of cost by calling any of these numbers:
Project Hope 1-800-LIFENET
Disaster Distress Helpline 1-800-985-5990, press 1
Visiting Nurses Association (718) 816-3500, offers in-home cognitive behavioral therapy
and Ira and Joyce Goldstein are still happy to connect you to an EMDR trauma therapist - 718-720-8849.
There will be a general meeting of the Staten Island LTRO this Wednesday, October 30th from 7:00-9:00pm at New Dorp Moravian Church, 2205 Richmond Rd.
It will be a time to listen to and encourage one another after a year of recovery work. We will share dinner (not baked zitti), watch the premiere of the Immigrant Storyline Project, and envision together what the next phase of the recovery process should look like.
Blessings,
Rev. Karen Jackson
